Nikon's "BIG" Announcement

Photography Bay is reporting of a few upcoming Nikon announcements, including a "BIG" one. What's not clear is what is being announced when. There is a rumor of an October 22nd announcement, in Copenhagen Denmark, of all places. Forgive me, but I'm not clear what photo-centric event is taking place on that date in Denmark. I am clear that that date is the press preview night for PDN's PhotoPlus Expo in New York City.

(Continued after the Jump)

I had to do a re-read because I thought that the "BIG" announcement graphic was for October 22nd, but, in fact, it's not. It's for WPPI's conference in Las Vegas. In fact, Nikon is - if the invite is genuine - renting out the entire MGM Arena, which has hosted many a boxing title fight. I was there on assignment covering the historic Tyson-Holyfield fight where some inappropriate noshing took place. So, perhaps Nikon was inspired by this photo we made last year when the D3 was put head to head in a battle Royale (Nikon - a first look, 12/8/07):

Curious, no?

Anyway, it looks likely we'll wait for the "main event" in February. Now if only I can get myself a ringside seat for this showdown.

If what is past is prologue, Nikon's D3x will be a 20MP+ monster. Or, maybe not. We shall see.

Actually they will announce this:A highly portable biometric monitor is available for amateur Glamour photographers and sports shooters alike. At least one remote sensor member includes one or more biometric sensors configured for operative coupling with a photographer's testicles. An additional neck collar includes electronics for operating the at least one remote sensor member. The at least one remote sensor member is separate from and not disposed on the testicle collar. Optionally, the collar also includes one or more biometric sensors . A communication link operatively connects the remote sensor member and the electronics of the testicle collar. A motion sensor and position sensor may be disposed with the one or more biometric sensors to sense movement and position, and the electronics configured to account for error in a signal produced by the one or more biometric sensors due to movement sensed by the motion sensor or position sensed by the position sensor. The electronics may log patient activity and body position. Cerebral connectors will be available for Fine-Art shooters as well. Details to follow upon request prior to announcement to qualified NPS members only.

I'm a Canon user but personally I hope Nikon comes out with another full frame camera that competes with the new 5D MKII.

The more competition in the market the better for us. When I shot film I would have never used a Canon but in the digital world up until recently its been hard not to use anything other then Canon.

I use TS lenses for my portrait work and its good to see Nikon releasing a new TS lens too.

Go Nikon!

So, can someone explain the whole micron thing as it relates to pixels on sensors? I get confused about the number of pixels vs the size of the pixels themselves. Is it, less pixels, but bigger ones are better, or the other way around? If anyone cares to explain I'd appreciate it so that when this mongo "D-Zilla" comes out I'll be able to grasp the significance of it's prowess.

Well, after looking through patent applications for both Nikon and Sony, it looks like Nikon has a new pro body with sensor dust detection/removal although it does not appear to be medium format, and Sony has a brand new patent published on Oct 16th detailing the manufacturing process of an image sensor. Makes you wonder, Sony's been making sensors for a long time and now they have a new manufacturing process? Hmmmmmm.....
